Lack of Provisions Cause Struggle for Public Hospitals Amidst Pandemic
Since the official outbreak of the coronavirus earlier this year and subsequent community quarantines that followed, the Philippines has experienced continuously dwindling medical supplies, equipment and manpower.
Despite strong efforts of the national government to procure medical provisions from both local and foregin providers, public hospitals on the forefront of this pandemic, are first to feel the strain as more and more patients continue to fill sickbeds while their medical staff are worked to the bone. As the number of active cases continue to rise, hospitals keep their doors open for donations of food, equipment, and supplies as a temporary measure to ensure that necessary resource levels are maintained.
“One such hospital on the forefront of pandemic is the Philippine General Hospital. As a one of the country’s leading hospitals as well as a designated National Medical University affiliated with the University of the Philippines – PGH has launched their new initiative labeled “UP Bayanihan na!” COVID-19 Operations Center” as a means to provide communications support, document potential cases while answering queries, and facilitate ways to donate or volunteer”
This new initiative of PGH comes on top of other previously launched initiatives. These being the development of a locally produced testing kit, and acting as one of three COVID-19 referral centers in the country.
